Antique tatting shuttle8/17/2023 I have walked away from several items that I wished I had purchased. I have found that when you see something that is calling your name you should buy it. The two dogs are measuring tapes, thimble holders and pin cushions I thought was different. I love tatting, bobbin lace and handmade laces and needle books that are unique. The information was given by her grandson the seller. I was told that it belonged to Katherine Bary who was a tatter who lived in Shreveport, Louisiana. I had to rescue this beautiful piece of tatting in the backdrop. The dealer sold several items to me from the same owner. I found the above items while on a weekend trip to Roundtop with Mike, I especially love the blue art deco shuttle which was purchased for $8.00 it was out of Jean Canaday estate sale. Front of Shuttle Shibayama Ivory with precious stones After 1890 the export of Japanese crafts decreased. Shibayama was produced to appeal to the West and made for export markets in late 1800's, they produced fine needlework tools sold in the Palais Royal. They used precious stones, malachite, coral, agate, ivory and horn. Shibayama technique from Japan Meiji Period was from 1868 to 1912. Hiramaki-e technique is a lacquer technique in which the designs are created by sprinkling gold or silver dust and polishing it. He introduced the decorative lacquer and later changed his name to Senzi Shibayama. Shibayama was named after Senzi Onogi in 1603. I purchased it from an Antique Dealer." She bought things from all over the world, but the dealer that sold her the shuttle is deceased according to Ruth. Ruth told me "I have had this shuttle for a very long time. Heidi referenced Pam Palmer's book "Tatting shuttles related Tools and Accessories." Her guess was coral inlaid, but that has not been confirmed by a gemologist. Her guess was 20th century because it was cruder than early craftsman. She said it was possibly made for the western market from 1880's to the 20th century. I contacted Heidi Nakayama who wrote the book "Tatting Shuttles of American Collectors". I plan to post pictures of this awesome collection and the cabinet as time allows. After starting the trip home, they changed their mind and returned to get it. They saw the cabinet in an antique shop but decided not to purchase it. I understand she loved the cabinet that they purchased on a trip home from Austin, Texas. Cole downsized from their beautiful home on 10 acres where they raised Longhorns. The cabinet belonged to our former Neighbors, Mr. He also surprised me with an antique cabinet to display the collection of shuttles. She told Mike that the shuttle is quite expensive and to handle with care so not to lose the precious stones. She especially loved the Japanese Shibayama Shuttle, Ruth had purchased that shuttle years ago from Antique Dealer. Ruth let us know she had prayed them to Texas, very thankful they arrived safely. She told me that Mike must really love me, and she wanted me to have them. Youngblood for such an honor to have her collection. Words cannot express what it was like opening her beloved shuttles that she packed with such loving care. Ruth carefully packed her beloved shuttles and wrote notes on them. Mike had purchased several pieces from her previously and gifted them as a Mother's Day gift in 2021. Mike bought an extensive collection from Ruth Youngblood, a fellow tatter and lace maker who loved to collect as much as I do! I had no idea that Ruth and Mike were planning a huge surprise for me.
